European Assistance

UL's hazardous locations staff are here to meet the needs of manufacturers seeking certification under the European Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX) Directive (94/9/EC) -- in addition to other European Directives that may also apply, such as the Electromagnetic Compatibility (2004/108/EC) or Machinery (2006/42/EC) Directives.

Regarding the ATEX Directive, UL International Demko A/S, a wholly-owned affiliate of UL, is designated in the European community as a Notified Body for all Group I (mining) and Group II (non-mining) equipment, protective systems and components. This Notified Body status allows Certificates of Conformity and Certificates of Component issued by UL Demko to be recognized by all European Community member states as a legal means of entry under the ATEX Directive.

As a means to facilitate certification under the ATEX Directive, UL has staff available around the world to conduct ATEX investigations on behalf of UL Demko.  Our staff can perform product investigations, testing, and complete test reports at our offices all around the world, with the final "EC Type" Examination Certificate and applicable Quality Assurance Notification Certification being issued by UL Demko.  This allows for a seamless, one-stop shopping experience to meet manufacturer's certification needs.

In addition to UL's European certification path involving UL Demko, UL also has a cooperative data exchange agreement with PTB, a German testing and certification organization with European Notified Body status under the ATEX Directive. UL can also accept IECEx Certificates of Conformity and Ex Test Reports from Ex Certification Bodies under the IECEx System to assist in the issuance of ATEX certification for European markets. This further streamlines the path for manufacturers of explosive atmospheres equipment, protective systems and components to obtain European and/or UL/C-UL certification.
